QUIET RUMOURS: AN ANARCHA-FEMINIST READER
Various
AK Press/Dark Star

From consciousness-raising groups to hair-raising punk rockers, here's a fascinating window into the development of the women's movement, in the words of the women who moved it. These classic essays span the century, providing welcome context for feminism as part of a larger politics of liberation and equality. Critical analysis and biting polemic, whether it's Emma Goldman's attack on the suffrage movement or the debates of Second Wave feminists of the 1970s, connect the dots to show not just how anarchism influenced feminism but how feminism changed the political landscape around it.

"With this important collection of and about anarcha-feminists over more than a century, stunning female anarchist heroes are restored to our collective memory." -Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

Partisanas: Women in the Armed Resistance to Fascism and German Occupation (1936–1945)
Ingrid Strobl
AK Press

Common stereotypes of women during wartime relegate them to the sidelines of history—to supporting roles like dutiful munitions factory workers or devoted wives waiting for their men to return home. The truth is that much of the armed resistance to fascism, before and during World War II, can be chalked up to women about whom official accounts have little or nothing to say. Through years of intrepid research and numerous interviews with the participants themselves, Ingrid Strobl excavates the history of the women who shouldered guns, planned assassinations, planted bombs, and were among the era's most active antifascist fighters. Strobl's commitment to and respect for her subjects has resulted in a work of both scholarly rigor and emotional depth. Weaving moving personal narratives into the broader history of the European resistance, Partisanas is both a detailed historical account and an investigation into what compelled women to reject their traditional roles to take up arms in a fight for a better world. This first English-language edition was translated by Paul Sharkey.

"The issues raised by the book—the ways women, in struggling together with others for broader freedoms, were effectively required to challenge traditional roles, and the ways those challenges were resisted, accepted and or incorporated—take on ever more resonance in the contemporary world. For, of course, women have been active in armed resistance, not only in Europe, but also in Algeria, Kuwait, Iraq, Palestine, Nicaragua, Argentina, Peru, and Mexico. The list goes on, but attention to the ways women's participation shapes broader movements and changes the lives of those women is still relatively uncommon. If this book highlights those questions again, and leads others to explore further the multiple dimensions of resistance and its multilayered impacts on participants, it will make a further, and continuing, contribution both to scholarship and to political struggle."—Martha Ackelsberg (author of Free Women of Spain), from the Foreword.

Ingrid Strobl is a filmmaker, lecturer, and writer living in Cologne, Germany.

PEOPLE WITHOUT GOVERNMENT: AN ANTHROPOLOGY OF ANARCHY
Harold Barclay and Alex Comfort (Preface by)

In a completely revised and updated edition of his seminal work, Barclay describes briefly the anarchic political structures of a number of societies. He ranges over (mainly) small-scale hunting, gathering, and horticultural groups, both in antiquity and today, but includes larger scale (and complex) groups too. This book seeks to show what anarchy has been like in practice. Special attention is paid to the techniques of leadership, maintaining order, and decision-making. The dynamic interplay between freedom and authority is considered, particularly the apparent tendency of anarchic polities to degenerate into states with government and for organizations to become oligarchies. Anarchy, as Barclay ably demonstrates, is neither chaos nor some impossible Utopian dream. In fact it is a very common form of political organization and one which has characterized much of the human past. Includes a preface by Alex Comfort.

POST-SCARCITY ANARCHISM
Murray Bookchin
AK Press

"Probably the foremost Green philosopher of the age." - David Nicholson-Lord (The Independent) A modern anarchist classic! Bookchin argues that material scarcity need no longer plague human history. Through the dissolution of hierarchal relations, social and cultural potentials can now be fulfilled in our "post-scarcity" era. When the naysayers and lickspittles ask of the social revolutionary movements, "yes, but what do you want?", well here at least is one rational answer. Bookchin gives us an inspiring vision of how a non-hierarchal, ecologically-minded and anti-capitalist society can equitably meet human needs. This Third Edition comes with a new Introduction from the Author.

RAPPORT FRÅN ETT DÖDSBLOCK
Mumia Abu-Jamal
Manifest

Rebel Alliances: The Means and Ends of British Anarchisms
Benjamin Franks
AK Press

Rebel Alliances offers an applied philosophical perspective on contemporary class-struggle anarchism in Britain. It identifies the main principles distinguishing this tradition from competing Leninist, liberal, and social-democratic groupings. From these key characteristics, Franks constructs a consistent anarchism, which both shares characteristics with politically-engaged post-structuralisms and has a distinctive ethic.

The theory and practice of contemporary groups are then assessed against this "ideal-type" of anarchism. Many of the central themes of anarchism are consequently subject to original scrutiny: the nature of the revolutionary subject; workplace and community organizing; violence and pacifism; the meaning of direct action; and propaganda by the word and deed.

"No one is better placed to examine the contemporary British anarchist movement than Ben Franks. Steal this book at the first opportunity."—Class War

"Provides a framework for understanding, analyzing, and appreciating the myriad forms of anarchist class struggle and must be praised for its scholarly achievement and avoidance of traditional academic restrictions."—David Lamb, Birmingham University

Stridsbok från Thomasbadet
Per Hellgren
Federativs

The Abolition of the State: Anarchist and Marxist Perspectives
Wayne Price
AuthorHouse

Both Anarchists and Marxists believe that it will be possible to do away with the state. But what do they mean by that? What is the state, after all? What institutions, if any, would be necessary to replace its functions? Would a transitional “dictatorship of the proletariat” be needed or will it be possible to immediately abolish the state? Does modern technology require a centralized institution such as the state? Throughout the history of revolutions, the people have created workplace councils and neighborhood assemblies--how could these replace the state?

Wayne Price is a longtime antiwar, human rights, and union militant. He has been a member of the Revolutionary Socialist League, the Love and Rage Anarchist Federation, and the Northeastern Federation of Anarchist-Communists. His writings appear in the Utopian, the Northeastern Anarchist, and in monthly articles on www.Anarkismo.net.

The biggest merit of this book is to put forward the anarchist case against the State in a very common sensical fashion, free of any deliberately hard to follow rhetoric. Anarchism is desirable and easy enough to grasp, and when properly explained –as this book does- it is hard for anyone not to share the basic anarchist outlook of a cooperative and truly democratic society.
- José Antonio Gutiérrez
