WHY WORK? Various Freedom Press In addressing the perennial question 'what is the function of work?', this volume of essays raging against the tyranny of work sports a deliberately provocative title. Drawing a firm distinction between useful, rewarding and pleasurable work and well-paid, but boring, useless employment, the writers maintain that the problems of capitalism can only be solved by abolishing the system of production for profit, and replacing it with production for need. The essays range from William Morris's ever topical Useful Work versus Useless Toil to Bertrand Russell's In Praise of Idleness; from Kropotkin's The Wage System to Camillo Berneri's The Problem of Work, and Tony Gibson's Who Will Do the Dirty Work? As well as discussing Production for Use versus Production for Profit other sections of the book variously dissect: The Problems and Pleasures of Work; and Alternatives and Futures. The latter includes Visions, a series of beautiful and imaginative fold-out drawings by the artist Clifford Harper, with a commentary by Colin Ward.
