DREAMS OF FREEDOM, A RICARDO FLORES MAGON READER Ricardo Flores Magon, Chaz Bufe (Editor), and Mitchell Verter (Editor) AK Press The words of this Mexican-American working class hero brought to English language readers for the first time. "From the darker nations comes the vibrant and still fresh voice of the tremendous anarcho-communist Flores Ricardo Magon. In Mexico they have streets named after him. Elsewhere he is little known. Hopefully those who are illiterate in Spanish will now take this great radical into our hearts through this very powerful collection. Land and Liberty!" —Vijay Prashad Along with Emiliano Zapata, Ricardo Flores Magón (b. 1874) is regarded as one of the most important figures of the Mexican Revolution. Through his newspaper Regeneración, he boldly criticized the injustices of the country's military dictatorship and worked to build the popular movement that eventually overthrew it. Exiled to the United States, Flores Magón continued to agitate for revolution in Mexico. Transcending nationalism, he also dreamed of a world free from all forms of injustice. Both the US and Mexican governments responded with harsh repression. Leavenworth Penitentiary ultimately murdered him in 1922. This volume collects the first English translations of Flores Magón's most important writings. A lengthy historical overview, chronology, maps, images, and bibliography provide context for his work. "Mitchell Verter and Chaz Bufe have given us a great gift with this fascinating volume on Ricardo Flores Magón. He was a revolutionary from a very different time from our own, but today's activists will make an immediate and intense connection with his passion for social justice. This is a gift that will only grow as you pass it on to others!"—Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed and Bait and Switch
"The life, words, and ideas of Ricardo Flores Magón are as important today as they were around 100 years ago. Bravo for this wonderful book that won't let us forget those days and those heroes. Today, as always, remembering is revolutionary"—Luis Rodriguez, author of Always Running and My Name is Hunger |

Facing the Enemy: A History Of Anarchist Organization From Proudhon To May 1968 Alexandre Skirda AK Press The finest single volume history of European anarchism is finally available in English in Paul Sharkey's elegant translation. Drawing on decades of research, Alexandre Skirda traces anarchism as a major political movement and ideology across the 19th and 20th centuries. Critical and engaged, he offers biting and incisive portraits of the major thinkers and, more crucially, the organizations they inspired, influenced, came out of, and were spurned by. Opinionated and witty, he is equally at home skewering the actions of the early anarchist Victor Serge as he is the Paris chief of police who organized undercover "anarchist bombers" in an attempt to infiltrate and discredit the movement. Skirda argues that the core problem for anarchists has been to create a revolutionary movement and envision a future society in which the autonomy of the individual is not compromised by the need to take collective action. How anarchists have grappled with that question in theory and practice make up the core of the book. Bakuninist secret societies; the Internationals and the clash with Marx; the Illegalists, bombers, and assassins; the mass trade unions and insurrections; and, of course, the Russian and Spanish Revolutions are all discussed through the prism of working people battling fiercely for a new world free of the shackles of Capital and the State.

| FREE WOMEN OF SPAIN: ANARCHISM AND THE STRUGGLE FOR THE EMANCIPATION OF WOMEN Martha A. Ackelsberg AK Press Cowards don't make history; and the women of Mujeres Libres (Free Women) were no cowards. Courageous enough to create revolutionary change in their daily lives, these women mobilized over 20,000 women into an organized network during the Spanish Revolution, to strive for community, education, and equality for women and the emancipation of all. Militants in the anarcho-syndicalist CNT union, Mujeres Libres struggled against fascism, the State, and reaction; and the less than supportive attitudes and concerns of their male comrades. Martha Ackelsberg writes a comprehensive study of Mujeres Libres, intertwining interviews with the women themselves and analysis connecting them with modern feminist movements. Price: 140kr |
| FRIENDS OF DURRUTI GROUP 1937-1939 Augustin Guillamòn AK Press "Revolutions without theory fail to make progress. We of the 'Friends Of Durruti' have outlined our thinking, which may be amended as appropriate in great social upheavals but which hinges upon two essential points which cannot be avoided. A program, and rifles." —El Amigo del Pueblo, No. 5, July 20, 1937. Spain 1936–1939: This is the story of a group of anarchists engaged in the most thoroughgoing social and economic revolution of all time. Essentially street fighters with a long pedigree of militant action, they used their own experiences to arrive at the finest contemporary analysis of the Spanish Revolution. In doing so, they laid down essential markers for all future revolutionaries. This study—drawing on interviews with participants and synthesizing archival information—is THE definitive text on these unsung activists. This volume is translated, edited, and introduced by Paul Sharkey, acknowledged internationally as the foremost expert on the Friends Of Durruti Group. Price: 80kr |
| FRIHETLIG KOMMUNISM I PRAKTIKEN.
| QUIET RUMOURS: AN ANARCHA-FEMINIST READER Various AK Press/Dark Star From consciousness-raising groups to hair-raising punk rockers, here's a fascinating window into the development of the women's movement, in the words of the women who moved it. These classic essays span the century, providing welcome context for feminism as part of a larger politics of liberation and equality. Critical analysis and biting polemic, whether it's Emma Goldman's attack on the suffrage movement or the debates of Second Wave feminists of the 1970s, connect the dots to show not just how anarchism influenced feminism but how feminism changed the political landscape around it. "With this important collection of and about anarcha-feminists over more than a century, stunning female anarchist heroes are restored to our collective memory." -Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz |

Rebel Alliances: The Means and Ends of British Anarchisms Benjamin Franks AK Press Rebel Alliances offers an applied philosophical perspective on contemporary class-struggle anarchism in Britain. It identifies the main principles distinguishing this tradition from competing Leninist, liberal, and social-democratic groupings. From these key characteristics, Franks constructs a consistent anarchism, which both shares characteristics with politically-engaged post-structuralisms and has a distinctive ethic. The theory and practice of contemporary groups are then assessed against this "ideal-type" of anarchism. Many of the central themes of anarchism are consequently subject to original scrutiny: the nature of the revolutionary subject; workplace and community organizing; violence and pacifism; the meaning of direct action; and propaganda by the word and deed. "No one is better placed to examine the contemporary British anarchist movement than Ben Franks. Steal this book at the first opportunity."—Class War "Provides a framework for understanding, analyzing, and appreciating the myriad forms of anarchist class struggle and must be praised for its scholarly achievement and avoidance of traditional academic restrictions."—David Lamb, Birmingham University Price: 130kr |
